Taking Time to
Learn
Friday, February 4, 2005
I remember my first days in the classroom after I had graduated from
college with a bachelor’s degree in education and a teaching certificate.
To say I felt a little scared is an understatement. Despite all the courses
and the three student teaching experiences I had, I still felt ill
prepared. Since my experiences were years ago, I had assumed new teachers
entered the classroom today feeling better prepared and supported. I was
wrong. |

Confronting
Double Standards
Friday, August 5, 2004
I’ll never
forget the day when my daughter looked at me and asked, “Mom, why do you
make me keep my room cleaner than you make David keep his room?” It was an
excellent question and I had no acceptable answer. As someone who does not
believe in a double standard, I had thought my behavior was vigilantly
equitable. Somehow, an artifact of growing up in the 50s and 60s had
sneaked out of my subconscious and left me with egg on my face. |

Education Among
Top Priorities
Tuesday, April 26, 2004
Throughout
West Virginia, broad-based community groups are meeting to discuss ways
they and policy makers can increase support of public education and quality
teaching. Citizens are taking responsibility for the quality of their
schools, and this commitment, as discussed below, is in step with the rest
of the nation. |
