One message has clearly been communicated: West
Virginians want caring, quality teaching for every child in our public
schools and are willing to help reach that goal.
West Virginians from all walks of life have been discussing ways to support
quality teaching in public schools at the local and state levels.
Communities have supported better professional development for teachers,
more authentic parental involvement in schools and increased student
representation, to name just of few of the local goals. They also identified
areas that needed to be addressed at the state level because of their
systemic and policy implications.
Over seventy-five percent of the counties in the Mountain State participated
in these historic discussions and five major areas were identified for
consideration at the state level. These state-level issues were carefully
considered by a cross-section of citizens and stakeholders at a Public
Education Summit held May 26, 2005.
The teaching quality initiative is supported by a grant from the Annenberg
Foundation through the Public Education Network.
